Product Description
From Venture Electronics, the company that brought us the much-loved Monk Plus IEMs, comes a series of cables designed to pair with your favorite Massdrop Made headphones. Each one is braided in black and dark blue to match the aesthetic of products like the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX and Massdrop x HIFIMAN HE4XX Read More
Hello guys. some of you know me from before or from my review of many massdrop exclusive products including the recent He4xx. The picture below is the thumbnail photo used in my video and you can see the red cable in the pic is actually a junkosha cable from VE.
I have had the previledge of helping with prototypes in making this massdrop exclusive cable and VE's future cables in general
few things I would like to point out:
1. cable microphonics have been a problem before but that has been long gone since the addition of the new sleeve which is much softer than previous sleeve material
2. I personally had problem with the heat shrink hitting my shoulders because it was too long. This has also been fixed
so if you know me, you know that I can get pretty picky. VE has addressed not most BUT all of my concerns and thus I have bought few cables myself for many of the hifiman, audeze, sennheiser headphones and countless iems at our studio.
hand made cables at this cost is remarkable in my opinion and since some stock cables especially the one for he4xx is not so great or if you want a different termination for your headphones, I believe this may float your boat.
I am not too keen on making a whole video on cables, maybe in the future but I wanted to leave a short review/info from what I know.
cheers,
Hi SOULSIK, is the Junkosha cable better than the VE Cable? im planning on ordering from their website instead so i can customize the colors for the sleeves. This is also for the HD6XX.
Hey man. 3.5 is single ended while 2.5 is a balanced connection.
for 2.5, you wouldn't be able to use it with a phone. You would need a portable player that has a balanced 2.5mm connection like fiio, astell and kern, or shanling.
with 2.5, you get more output and lower noise floor.
hope this helps !
I have many of these cables from this manufacturer. Before I really begin, let me point out that recently Venture Electronics (i.e VEClan) had recently stopped selling cables via their website due to quality control problems, which I also have experienced. The cables are for sale again and I hope they have improved.
You can find VEClan's website here for their cables: https://www.veclan.com/engappliance_sel_one?eng_ApplianceVo.eac_id=16 I have many balanced and single ended cables from this manufacture for my Fostex TR50RP, Pinnacle P1, HD650, HD600, AKG 7xx and Beyerdynamic DT1990. I have tried multiple different types of cable material from here, and they all have cable noise challenges when rubbed against your clothing, to the point where many just got thrown away since it was so unusable. Think a 5 o'clock shadow being rubbed on a piece of paper. It's pretty awful. The 'best' of the materials being the "VE Basic B 4 wire", which is a beige and orange twisted cable that is pretty decent. This cable on MassDrop is the "VE Black Litz" material, and again, it's awful.
The quality control issues are also another point I need to bring up. I have had 3 cables from a bulk purchase that were terminated backwards where the left and right channels were wrong on a single ended cable. These cables just ended up getting thrown away.
If you are looking for a really nice cable, give Ursine Audio (http://ursine.audio/) a try. I have thrown away all but one of the VEClan cables I have bought (so long $300, I hardly knew ye'!) , and I personally regret wasting money on inferior cables that just ended up in the trash.
In my opinion, the only way that this cable is usable is if you like to listen to your media in the nude, and even then, only if you shave all that manly fur off...
You know what, that's funny, my only VEClan cable is unsleeved and I never move around when I where it since I listen at home or at a desk.
Sucks to hear about the issues though, my biggest issue is loose MMCX connectors.
I'm not convinced of the supposed boost in sound quality from custom headphone cables. For every review I've read that claims a significant increase, I've read another that claims the change is negligible. As far as sound quality goes, I think the money is better spent on a better amp or DAC.
Having said that, I recently ordered a custom cable for my HD6XXs from BestInTheVerse, not because I think it will sound that much better, but that it will be more comfortable to use, which is a big consideration with headphones. I find the stock rubbery cable slightly annoying to use, so I decided to take a chance on BITV. He gets great reviews on the headphone forums, and his cables are not obscenely expensive like a lot of custom cables are. He uses quality components (e.g., Canare Star Quad) and they also look great in the photos on his site (I ordered Midnight Blue/Charcoal Gray to match the HD6XX).
Once it arrives, I will try to remember to post my impressions here, just to provide another point of reference.
SpinyNorman.
What is BITV?
Otherwise I agree with your sentiments about cables. At best it is the last part of the setup to worry about and spend money if one has too much of it at disposal.
However, stock cables can get destroyed, be too short or long or we might need a different connector like XLR that is usually not coming with purchased headphones.
Sorry but this is so far over the top I can't remain quiet. I suggest you go buy these cables on your own from the manufacture direct and save ridiculous amounts of money. The $50.00 upcharge on most of the balanced options found is more than you will pay for the cable in any length if you buy direct.

Order form anyone you like, it does not matter to me. I was just giving an example that custom cables are not cheap !
The ones on here cost less than most. Some people do not think that custom cables are worth the price, some people do. I have bought from several suppliers , and like what I have received. People with a closed mind and light wallet need to stick with stock cables. Really simple, nobody's twisting your arm.
I have no affiliation with any manufacturer or distributor. My intent was only to show the ridiculous markup that is taking place here. Piticulary for the balanced option at checkout which makes the price over $105.00 if memory serves. you are free to spend your money any way you chose so if you would like to give massdrop extra cash be my guest. And also feel free to go to the VE website on your own if you would rather buy 2 cables for what massdrop will charge you for one.
The problem with this cable is that the ends by the headphone connectors where they are heatshrinked are 3in long and they hit you in the shoulder when you use it.
I am not sure if it is justifiable to purchase a cable that cost $50 USD + and I got no idea about the sound quality as well since the HD6XX will take a few more weeks to ship. I am into keyboards too and a custom USB to USB cable can easily cost £20.
I have not received my cable yet which landed in my country 2 days ago, probably will get it later or tomorrow, so I have not seen this personally. But from the pictures posted, it looks very well made and will definitely look and feel better than the stock rubbery cable provided with the HD6XX.
The HD6XX also came with the 3.5mm connector and most amplifier(not balanced) uses the 6.3mm connector which is one of the main reason why I bought this. I would like to avoid using adapter as much as I can because they do not look good.
There is no 3.5mm connector for this but I am pretty sure the 6.3mm connector was available but sold out. If you scroll down the list you will see it.
So I just got my 6XXs and have never bought custom cables. Are these purely for aesthetics, or do they actually serve a purpose for the headphones in terms of sound quality?
Thanks!
it is not balanced. Balanced in audio refers to a differential signal path using transformers or active circuitry to send audio down two conductors. With a phase relationship of 180 degrees. Such that when recombined any noise showing up in both signals is differentially removed. In most all cases balanced signals require a reference ground/neutral conductor. So 3 conductors per signal. All ‘balanced‘ headphone cables do is give the left and right signals their own discrete ground wire. The signals are not differential, there are not any active or galvanic balanced headphone cables that I can find. I’m also skeptical that there is any actual separation of the ground on the other side of the 4 pin xlr. More than likely it just ties the return pins together with a 10 ohm resistor.
CalaverasgrandeWhile you are accurate that balanced does not necessarily mean dual differential signal you appear to have misunderstood my post. The benefit for me is two fold, one is the differential balanced output via dual 3 pin xlr's over the odd 18 feet of run from my DAC to my headphone amps (noise reduction) and my specific amp's XLR output yields a lower output impedance and increased power output. I also need dual outputs or I have to split my signal, RCA to the preamp and XLR to the headphone amps. I never said that XLR headphone cables have any noise mitigation benefit.
Got both my mmcx to 3.5mm & 2.5mm cables. Well, you get what you paid for, and build quality and sound is comparable with any $10-20 USD cable from eBay or AliExpress.
The mmcx connector on both my cables are a bit loose. It fits well to both my pinnacle p1 & ue900s, but you can detach it if accidentally tug to something. The original cables from both fit a lot tighter and sound Fuller (probably better wire quality)
It's alright if you want to get a cheap replacement cable for your old IEMs or if you want to try 2.5mm balance. I will pass if I'm looking for an upgrade cable.
