Audiophile favorite Violectric is back with an all-analog amp for headphones and speakers—and it’s launching exclusively on Drop. Introducing the new HPA V550: a low-noise, high-output amp with several selectable gain modes Read More
I really want this but will have to wait for a while. Got 2800 coming via government bribe and need to be sure my wife's retirement checks are coming in first. I'll likely have to wait for the next sale.
Head over to the Violectric website and look around see how you feel afterwards. There are so many opinions and reallly just boils down to taking a chance and pulling the trigger. You may or may not like the way it sounds but I can tell you the quality is there.
I’m beginning to see Drop has more trolls trolling harder and harder.
Especially On items like this.
Trust your feelings.
I have not noted the trolls but there are a lot of ignorant people expressing an opinion as fact. I find them easy to ignore. Then again, I mostly use the political boards where there are professional trolls working to create myths.
They've been using the same design for a while. I guess either not enough people cared about it, requires compromise in terms of engineering, or they just don't want to change it.
The gain switches just reposition the volume control so that you have a wide range of adjustment. The main purpose is to set the best gain for your source not to adjust gain for different headphones.
I love my V280, but would almost want to switch to this if it wasn't also housed in a nearly 1 foot long case. ;)
Kidding aside, I wonder how HD800S phones would fare with (what appears to be) reduced power in the 300 Ohm range.
I mean it's still more wattage and voltage at that impedance than virtually any other amp right now. I have the first v281 sold in North America and have been seeing if any amp since then has been able to put more than a watt into 600 ohms like these violectrics can. So far it really anything can, maybe a couple that are well over 3 times the price, and they don't do the lower impedances well as a compromise.
So considering 300-600 ohm headphones can sound great on any other amp designed for those impedances. I don't see why a slight drop in overall wattage in this amp would make it any less capable, when it's still much more power than all those other options. I guess if you only use 600 ohm headphones and want the absolute highest power output, then stick to the V280/281. Otherwise the 550 is better for a larger user base when considering current headphone impedances.
