Product Description
Maybe you were looking at the Yamaha HS8 studio monitor to complete your home setup, but you wouldn’t mind losing a little bit of the low-end response if it means dramatically reducing the size and weight of the speaker. Built with a 5-inch woofer and able to fit into nearly any home system, the Yamaha HS5 studio monitor brings you powerful performance that doesn’t take up the entire desk Read More

Just had a quick question. Im trying to get a surround sound setup whether it will be 5.1, 7.1, whatever. I guess Im wondering if it would be odd to get 5/7 of these speakers..? Or 2 then the rest are from another brand? Im a noob obviously so, apologize for the confusion.

I put multiple links only so that nobody can claim that the price I am referring to is a singularity a one time rare offer of a specific store or something and that the standart price is different...
The standart price is what ever most of the market puts out for a price tag thats the standard price..
And these are EU prices which means that they already have 19% or 24% VAT included (which US based offers dont have so that means they could lower their price even more)
Pricedrop has become full of BS... it used to be that you get things cheaper because you massordered them with other at wholesale prices... now its just an other retailer giving you things up at retail prices and probably they avoid in that way taxes that other legit retailers have to pay...
Massdrop doesnt serve us we serve massdrop... and by "we" I mean you the poor guys that get screwed up and giving them your hard earned dollar. I dint even check but I bet most retailers have a better price in USD for those speakers (especially because of the absence of VAT) well actually its just a google away so here it is 120$ https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CFOX420?m=A4OT5UXFXYTGI&ref_=v_sp_detail_page
if these retailers can sell on that price you bet your behind massdrop could get a better offer ... and maybe they did and just sell them for 150$ and pocket the spread.

Note to people who expect the world at least somewhat logical: This drop is for ONE speaker. Not a pair. ONE. Because a studio somewhere really wants to monitor their audio in mono.
Some clarification: I know that studio monitors can/are sold per speaker. But I've never seen a POWERED studio monitor that didn't come as a pair. Mainly because it doesn't make sense for each speaker to have it's own amp.
u2berggeistIt makes perfect sense for powered studio reference monitor speakers to each have their own amplifiers. The goal of a monitor is to serve as a reference, so each speaker should be identical, so the amp should be built into each. One never need be concerned which speaker is left or right. And a speaker could be replaced independently if needed. And identical speakers with their own amps could also be used for mono or 5+ channel surround.

I've definitely encountered both single and pair. Generally pairs are single amp in one speaker and a passive second speaker as you described. These tend to be cheaper budget options (cheap mackies, rockvilles etc) or meant to be home bookshelf speakers (i.e. vanatoos). Medium budget to higher end dedicated sound production monitors tend to always be individually amped and sold as singles. This was the case years ago with my m audio bx5s. A couple of the reasons this completely makes sense is that the built in amp in each individual speaker would not only be isolated from each other, but also the space taken up inside the cabinet by said amp would be identical, and thus a pair of these single speakers would always sound consistent. While an active + passive pair probably sounds so close you can't tell.. the true audiophile/sound engineers that claim they can hear the difference, will always clamor for individually amped speakers sold individually like this.

Waiting for the HS7 to come back. How about it Massdrop?
Lot's of folks don't understand the difference between studio monitors and bookshelf speakers. Bookshelfs are meant to fill a room with sound. The frequency response and sound of bookshelf speakers is going to be somewhat ( or a lot) hyped. Imagine a graphic equalizer with the bass and treble bands pushed up, and midrange frequencies pulled down. This type of speaker sounds great on your pop music and dance music. Studio monitors are meant to be flat, clean and clear. They are not designed to fill an entire room with sound. They are meant to be set up a few feet in front of the listener, and played at a moderate volume. In a way you can think of monitor speakers as headphones that sit out in front of you. If you are sitting 3-4 feet directly in front of them, enough bass. Or at least enough to discern whether an instrument needs to be eq-ed.

CalaverasgrandeGREAT description of the difference in Near Field and Bookshelf - could not have explained it better... JUST AN FYI NOTE: I am a big Massdrop Fan and have and still purchase items through Massdrop. Also I own a pair of the YAMAHA HS8 purchased and these are FANTASTIC NEAR FIELD MONITORS IN MY OPINION. HOWEVER - "B"E" W"A"R"N"E"D" -- MASSDROP AND THEIR VENDOR FOR YAMAHA MONITORS ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO SELL YAMAHA. THE MANUFACTURER 3 YEAR PARTS AND LABOR WARRANTY ON THESE MONITORS "I"S" "V"O"I"D" WITH A MASSDROP PROOF OF PURCHASE. I PURCHASED THE HS8 on the last drop and after about a year the power supply began to fail. AGAIN - MASSDROP IS NOT AUTHORIZED to SELL YAMAHA. IT TOOK MASSDROP 6 WEEKS TO AUTHORIZE A RETURN. Because I was using these on an ongoing project I had to PURCHASE ANOTHER PAIR THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. With the time and effort the "Discount" I got through Massdrop which ended up being about $100.00 total COST ME $1,000 dollars in time and the second set. Unless they explicitly state on the drop info that "comes with manufacturer warranty" (which some drops do) ASSUME THE MANUFACTURER WARRANT IS VOID. Hope this helps those of you who are considering joining the drop. I LEARNED THE HARD WAY...Although I LOVE THE HS8...however I don't know what the reduction in woofer diameter will do to bass response. On the HS8 there is no need for a sub woofer. Great Monitors - just decide whether or not you are cool buying them and giving up the (3) Year Parts and Labor Warranty that you won't have.

BE WARNED IF YOU JOINED THIS DROP -- JUST A NOTE OF INFORMATION:
THIS DROP IS NOT WITH THE MANUFACTURER AND ARE NOT PURCHASED THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED YAMAHA DEALER. THE WARRANTY IS ***VOID*** IF PURCHASED THROUGH THIS DROP.
While Massdrop does have some drops coordinated with the Manufacturer (Sennheiser headphones for example) I have been in touch with Yamaha because
I joined and purchased the HS8's through a drop last year. I had a power supply fail in one of the monitors. After (6) weeks of trying to get someone to listen they had me ship the bad unit back and then after another three weeks informed me they couldn't replace them. As a professional Audio producer for Radio and TV I had to purchase another set from Sweetwater. (BTW Sweetwater came close to the price and they are fully warrantied)
Yamaha indicated Massdrop nor their "vendor" are authorized to sell Yamaha and they are attempting to find out the source of this purchase.
These are GREAT Near Field Mastering Monitors but BE ADVISED PURCHASING THROUGH MASSDROP ***VOIDS*** WARRANTY ELIGIBILITY.
I hope my misfortune can be a warning to others so my fellow audiofiles don't go through the hassle and expense that I had to go through.
Cheers.

Too funny, perception today is based on little speakers, that do need subs, many nowadays simply have never listened to "Old School". My Klipsch KLF-20's do not need a "sub-woofer", they came built-in back then,, four 10" ones. Never did a block party, but have had them out on the deck for fun, cranked they give you a home outdoor concert feel, need warning zone cones around them;) The KLF-30's must be even more fun...
