No DAC/amp stack is complete without a quality connection. Designed for DACs with two XLR outs and headphone amps with two XLR ins, the C006 XLR Interconnect Cables from Fanmusic bridge a balanced connection for distortion-free listening Read More
The reason for that 'Gotham' lead is for very long cable runs: shielding for RF rejection, flexibility for tough durable mechanical resilience. Not sound quality.
For medium and short runs you can do much better for sound quality. And not for high cost. Just some Neutrik connectors for about £3.50 each (=£14) and some solid silver 99.99% 0.71mm wire (say 3 metres for a pair of 0.5metre cables = about £30). Solder it together yourself.
The description says the number of conductors is 2. But aren't true XLR's supposed to have three separate conductors - one for Positive, the second for Negative, and the third for Ground?
Rsharma314Technically that 3rd piece of metal, the shield, is not supposed to conduct signal, but you're right that the "2 conductor" detail suggests this is unshielded cable. On the other hand, the "Shielded DC resistance" specification is mostly likely supposed to be "Shield DC resistance." That resistance is lower than the two conductors, because the shield is made of more wires. It sounds to me like the people selling these cables don't really know what they're talking about. "Impressive 94% copper density" is nonsense words, but could mean 94% pure copper wire - which is not impressive at all. And there's no spec given at all for cable capacitance - which, if there was one specification that mattered in line-level interconnects, that would be it (although for an 8-inch cable, NONE of these specs really matter, aside from durable construction, shield coverage, and pair twisting - the latter two determining the common mode rejection, which is the noise-rejecting characteristic of the balanced connection). There's just no reason to pay $45 for a pair of 8" XLR cables.
I've rarely seen cables available in this length without special order or questionable origin. If you need this length of cable jump on it, if you are looking for 3' to 50' those are available on a hundred different sites so stop bitchin'
I completely understand your attempted analogy. It’s just that it’s ass backward for anyone remotely familiar with economics. In each scenario which is the cost and which is the benefit? Also, seriously which economic study finds such a sweeping conclusion that a one hour increase gives 40% increase in salary?
Let's see. Canare 2T2S in bulk is $0.49/foot. Add 2 pairs of XLR Neutrik connectors (2 male and 2 female) for less $4 a piece, 2 pairs of color rings for $0.20 a piece. Canare is a good brand but I prefer Mogami 2549 (bulk), which sounds cleaner, and make cables myself.
andyoYou seem to be making a good case for this price being fair, FYI. You list out about $20 worth of materials, and making these cables is sort of a pain in the ass (speaking from experience - I'm not an expert so it takes me about 20-30 minutes a cable). If you don't have the tools or the time, $40 all in is definitely worth it.
andyothen add in the soldering iron, solder, flux, tip cleaner, helping hands, multimeter, heat shrink, paracord, & wirecutter/stripper. If you go dirt cheap on all of those, it's about $50.
aww123"Too short for DAC to active speakers" Why complain about something these weren't designed to do? These are for connecting a DAC stacked with an amp, not to speakers. Useless response IMO.
Casey_KeyVery right but depends on your setup and where the DAC is compared to the amp. If on a different shelf then too short else ok. I always leave some slack so I won’t unnecessarily strain the connectors or cables.
it’s not a complain by the way, it’s just an observation for one’s own setup.
I used on line guide to build all my headphones, DAC and AMP cables. There are many articles and websites that have lots of information DIY and this Webpage is excellent and very helpful: http://robrobinette.com/BalancedCable.htm
You need to have a multi meter, i sourced my Neutrik connectors, cable sleeve from Ali Express, Amazon and cable from Performance Audio. Hopefully, this will help you a little bit. It is not that hard to build them, just tedious .
Erm, yeah. Why pay this absurd price for these cables when you can make them for $10 (or less) using Neutrik and Mogami? Or buy stage right cables at Monoprice for $16 for a pair of 1.5'.
Don't get me wrong, not knocking the build quality or components of these, just questioning the price point.
just mean you need to buy more cables from him =)
I actually do enjoy his system. need only one cable from AMP to headphones, just exchange them at interconnects
same goes for my Bluetooth, doesn't matter if using IEM or hd6xx
i like the idea a lot
