Product Description
From Mitchell & Johnson, an exciting new hi-fi company out of London, the GL2 allows you to enjoy the sound of an electrostatic headphone without having to own a specialized electrostatic amplifier. It does this with an electret driver, which works like an electrostatic driver but is permanently charged using a special diaphragm that can store and utilize this charge in everyday use Read More

So, to the experts on here that own the gl2, What do they compare with in terms of other great headphones like the hd600, Monolith m565 or the m1060 etc?

Maybe m565 doesn't profit of the seal like the M&J headphones do. In my experience the JP1 really doesn't like velour pads. Their subbass drops into oblivion and the mids become unnatural (thin and metallic) with them on, a shame since the midrange is their best asset. GL2 are closed back as well so I'd think they would react the same way.

I'm thinking of getting some adhesive loop velcro custom cut for the SRH1540 pads. I was thinking of going off the dimensions of the brainwavs oval velour pads, but I would appreciate dimensions if you have them. Lmk if you want a pair and we can split the quote.
Not sure Amazon offers a 30-day return but if so why not buy the GL2 and the others that look like the GL2 to audition? After you're done, you can say which one is the real deal and return the others.

Hello, are the earpads easily replaceable or it involves some tinkering? I am thinking to use my spare Elex earpads on the GL2Thanks !

Just FYI, the Sharkk Bravo is not the same headphone as this one. Please see my lengthier comment above.

XephyrothYeah, I read that already, that's why I got it. Same company, similar technology, for $30 why not give it a try.

Very tempting for the price but so few reviews out there. Intrigued that some folks here prefer these to Sennheisers. Trying to figure out whether it's just hype or are these really hidden gems?

In my experience, the GL2 improved a lot after burn-in. At that point, a completely different headphones. But it takes many hours to improve. Finally, I got a decent performance. It is light and nice looking too. Cups are real wood but I'd like less plastic on these headphones. I tried GL2 with Accuphase, WooAudio WA7, PrimaLuna and Triode amplifiers, Iphone, and other portables. Some people compare this one with the Sennheiser HD6nn, a 300-ohms, open. Though the Senn is better, I would compare M&J against 32-ohm closed portable: V-Moda XS. I prefer V-Moda: better built and sound definition. But different price... I think that for a USD70 budget the GL2 is OK. You must consider that I am speaking about the units I own only and personal preferences.

I tried out the Shark Bravo headphones (saw them on Amazon for 30 bucks, so thought why not). If the Mitchell & Johnson is voiced in a similar manner, then they will be extremely underwhelming. The Bravo's bass is the primary culprit as it tends to be quite loose, slow, and can distort a touch (though it rarely does). It does veil into the midrange a bit but doesn't entirely take away from the sound signature as it gives the mids a warmish tone to them, but also takes from the energy creating a headphone that is non-fatiguing. The treble is on the softer side without losing much detail. It offers the sounds and experience, but without the excitement; there is little air to be had. That's all I can really say about them.
On Head-Fi, it was stated numerous times that the demo models had this sort of signature, but the final would be more neutral. If this is indeed the case, then they may very well be worth the 200 dollars you'd put down on these.
The Bravo just doesn't cut it if you're trying to compare them to something in that 200 dollar range (a pair of HiFiMan planers would do you much better). For 30 bucks I can't complain, but there are still some better gems in the wild. I'll update again when the M&J come in.

tinyman392Update, received the GL2 and have to say I’m pleasantly surprised by them. The pads are not as thick as the Bravo which can add quite a bit to the sonic abilities. Overall, the sound of the GL2 is much brighter and less dark. The bass doesn’t distort while maintaining good depth and presence. The midrange no longer sounds veiled and offers much more energy, detailing, and clarity overall. We can see similar patterns in the treble in terms of energy and presence. Despite the higher quantity of treble, it’s still better controlled and less edgy. I burned in both headphones for at least 48 hours.

tinyman392Great news! The GL2 tuning is beautiful. Mitchell & Johnson spent a great deal of time getting the sound locked in. A little warm, with a very open sound. There is all kinds of detail. But it isn't thrown at the listener. It just sounds natural.
My pair took longer than 48 hours to break in.

Pass on this drop, guys.
These are a direct rebadge of the Taiwanese Verisonix I502C which you can find here:
http://www.verisonix.com/i502c.html
Plenty of users have posted links to other rebadges which are much cheaper than this price tag.
Of course, Massdrop wants to bring us more reputable brand names, so I understand that they would rather partner with a seemingly more publicly known (albeit probably not by much) Mitchell & Johnson compared to some other unknown company like CyberDrive. That being said, Massdrop caters to audiophiles—who do their research and know when there's a bad deal.

Copied from another drop of a sibling M & J set. It applies to this as it's nearly the same cans as those dropping here. ------------------------------------ I bought and tested a more affordable model from this company. Their GL1... Painful to wear and some of the worst that I have ever heard. Boxy, harsh and boomy yet lacking low sub bass. Maybe defective? Not likely. Those are $300 on Amazon and not even worth $50.
Oh, get this. Another company with a clever two person name pulled out of thin air I presume called Tate & Bauer has this near identical electrostat, the HD900R (go look it up) for $80. Good God these look a bit like a once $300 now $30 Sharkk Bravo nightmares.
