Upgrade your audio setup with the SMSL M6: a high-quality DAC and powerful amp rolled into one compact package. The aluminum housing has an industrial aesthetic, complete with a thick front panel with exposed screws Read More
You don't hear 1's and 0's but that is all a computer understands.
A DAC converts digital codes that represent small snippets of an analog signal back into the original analog signal. Powers refers to sending version of that signal that is powerful enough to drive the headphones to make the sound to the headphones.
In short, it's a magical box of wonders.
I'm finding some mixed info in the comments, but for the Sennheiser 6XX, out of the three, what would you pick? The SMSL M6 DAC/Amp, the O2 DAC + O2 Amp stack, or the Schiit Modi 2 + Magni 3? I mean, I would honestly like to save some money, but if having the O2 stack or the Schiit stack is much better, then I guess I'll save up for that.
Just saw a review of the M6 on YouTube. Long story short, You will need precise measurement equipment to find a difference between the DACs. Where You will find a difference is the amp. However, this should be sufficient to drive the HD6XX, even if not to earbleeding levels. IMHO, if You need more than 90 dB on the HD6XX, You chose the wrong headset and should have gone for a closed back ones.
why the 240$ usd msrp ? the m6 has been at 160$ for ages in amazon and other websites . i like the discount but maybe im not getting a better deal because of that insanely high msrp (starting price ).
BabalebaThe MSRP has nothing to do with Amazon, it's the price suggested to the retailer by the manufacturer. Pretty much no products are sold at MSRP, which still makes it kind of misleading for Massdrop to compare to MSRP but doesn't mean the MSRP is false.
so recently i have been getting this popping sound in my left earpiece only from my headphones. I have noticed this amp getting hot. The biggest thing i noticed is that when I press on the top of the amp it pops more. Not sure what the problem is. If anyone could help that'd be amazing!
OblivionIt sounds like a grounding issue if touching the device gives a popping sound to your headphones. Make sure you are using grounded power cables, or connect the chassis of the device with a cable e.g. to a radiator or something that you know is grounded. Also, there might be a broken connection inside the device itself, which would be a manufacturing defect and hopefully still under warranty. This might (but shoudn't) also happen if the device has been exposed to a lot of vibration or been dropped, which would not be under warranty.
I'm on Windows 10 and can only get 32bit/192khz to work. When I try to set the format to 32bit/384khz it says "Format not supported by this device.". I have the drivers installed. I would really like to get this thing to run at its optimal settings as I have some DSD files I'd like to test out for the first time!
Yep i had the same issues with the windows driver. So you got cmedia to run 385 in settings? I already returned mine and got a m8a so i cant do any furthur testing on the m6.
MrBeanTotaly the O2. It doesn't look as sleek but the audio quality is amazing. Just be sure to get one with RCA outputs. The RCA jacks should be connected to the DAC and should run off the sun without the power supply. The amp will need the power supply. Also the amp should auto switch when you plug in headphones.
I’m interested in this, but have some questions. 1) I’d be using this with my DT990 Pro (250Ohm), can I assume this would be a good match? 2) I also have a pair of passive speakers on my desktop. Is the RCA line out on the back also amplified or would I still need to run this pas an amp/receiver of some sort. (I’d rather remove what’s currently powering them from the equation). 3) Currently, my headphones are plugged directly into my motherboard, which actually delivers some pretty decent output power (built-in amp should be able to drive 600Ohms). However, one of the reasons for getting this would be to eliminate the horrible interference generated by my GPU. What would be the best way to hook this up to my PC. Would this (completely) eliminate the interference?
I don't know the answer myself, but saw this question (or something like it) a couple of times before. Maybe this helps: https://www.massdrop.com/buy/smsl-m6-dac-amp/talk/592967.
Also, I think the guy from z-review shortly mentions something similar in his vid, so perhaps he or the people on the zreview reddit have the answer?
Verthemthat is actually very very helpful, but I think I am happy enough with the sound quality to mess around with ASIO. I have some reading up on this to do haha.
You can run as amp only, the unit lets you choose from three input options: USB, coaxial, and optical.
Of course you still are limited with one set of RCA jacks, especially if you're planning to run external speakers like myself. Still, there are options.
Good to know that it doubles for future reference. I've never seen that anywhere but Massdrop, but tbh, I haven't really looked that closely for it either. It's not a device I care enough about to spend much time researching. I don't like tube amps.
" you'll probably never notice the difference anyway " . tsk-tsk. That's our biggest problem here. We do notice the difference and that makes us very sad. B-bye money, hello hifi sound. :)
