Greetings Friends,
I'm super happy to announce our newest collaboration - the Ultralight Double Sleeping Pad. This builds on our success of Massdrop x Klymit pads with ultralight 20 denier fabric, non-slip treatment on part on the bottom fabric, and fast inflate/deflate valves. We've listened to our members who have made it clear that there is demand for a double-wide pad in this same style.
What's wrong with current options on the market?
Weight: Most double pads are meant for car camping and therefore are typically too heavy to take backpacking.
Size: Also, many existing double pads are too wide to fit into the most popular light and ultralight shelters.
Cost: Since most double pads are made for car camping, they tend to be of lower quality. The only truly ultralight pad, made by Exped, costs $300 - well out of the range of what most people will spend.

Our Ultralight Double prototype with my custom EE two-person quilt.
We wanted to address these issues and give you an option to cuddle with your best hiking partner. You no longer have to fiddle with straps to couple two pads together, leaving cold air gaps. You can now afford to get a pad that is both comfortable and light. We've been able to increase the thickness to 3.2" to help you achieve your best night of sleep. And this makes it a great fit for not just backpacking, but also cabin trips, car camping, and luxurious solo trips.

As for the size, this double pad is essentially double of our regular pad. However, it feels bigger because you're sharing the space with someone so you don't feel the edge effect as much. Yet, it's small enough to fit into a "solo" tent like the Tarptent Protrail. To illustrate, check at me and Yanbo (Mech Keys Product Manager) testing out an early prototype in our office. He's a buff dude with wide shoulders, and at 6'0" and 200 lbs, I'm no munchkin either. Yet here we are laying shoulder to shoulder with our elbows still on the pad. So, cuddling with your sweetie should be easy peasy for most folks.
search
Note that we lengthened the pad a bit from this earlier prototype
We've also heard you that for a pad like this, it would be ideal to have an air pump bag that is also a dry bag / stuff sack. We are working on one right now and will include it with every double pad. We do not have any photo-ready samples yet, though I can share the basic specs: 20d fabric, seam sealed with roll top, and about twice as wide as the current Klymit rapid air pump.
Happy to hear your thoughts on this! The drop starts Thursday morning and will run through all of February. Shipping will be early summer and we'll have a more specific date by Thursday.

Could the inflate bag double as a pillow?

DannyMilks@DannyMilks Please please consider adding a strap system with this so we can turn this into a 2 person 'love seat' at basecamp (see the Sea to Summit Air Chair concept, I hope the concept is not patented or anything). The thing is that bringing two S2S Air Chairs with 2 pads was a lot lighter than bringing 2 separate camp chairs (even the lightest weight ones are 600gr). Having a double pad removed the possibility of turning the 2 sleeping pads into comfortable chairs through the air chair system. I think almost every UL buyer of a 2 person pad would also consider adding that to their kit.

Update 7/13 We’re checking in to let you know the Massdrop x Klymit Ultralight Double Sleeping Pads are wrapping up production. Once production is complete the pads will go through the quality control process.
We’re on track to ship the pads in August, and we’ll check back in around early August with the latest shipping update. Update 6/21 Hi everyone,
We just received the latest update from Klymit on the Massdrop x Klymit Ultralight Double Sleeping Pad. The production delay puts our new estimated ship date in August. We apologize for this delay, and we know it is extremely disappointing for everyone involved. We’ve worked with Klymit to add a $15 credit to your account. This credit will be automatically applied to the next drop you join. If you don’t want to wait the additional time you can cancel your order via the transactions page: https://www.massdrop.com/transactions
We’ll provide an update with the latest information in July.

The ones Massdrop mentioned in their own description: Exped Synmat HL Duo. They are right that it is a lot more expensive than the Massdrop one, but its a proven product and you can pick either the regular one with r3.3 or the ‘winter’ one with R5.0 (850-ish grams vs 1050-ish grams). I am leaving in 11 days so just couldn’t wait anymore.

Hi everyone, We have an update on the production status of the Massdrop x Klymit Ultralight Double Sleeping Pad. Klymit has informed us that during final quality control checks they uncovered an issue with the welding of the pad. The issue made it so the pad wouldn’t pass their rigorous lifecycle testing and high quality standards. Klymit is currently working on making some revisions to the molding, and testing to make sure these revisions meet and exceed their thresholds. As soon as the product comes off the line, it will be air shipped to our warehouse in New Jersey where it will then be shipped to members. We know this wait has been frustrating and we apologize greatly. We’re working with Klymit to determine an estimated ship date given these changes, and we’ll provide an update as soon as we have more information from their production team. Thank you all for your patience!

Ditto. In hindsight, would have been lovely to know how long it would take because I'd have just put the money aside for the Exped. Even though they're pricey, I've used two different Expeds and they are super comfy. This pad better make me feel like I'm sleeping on a cloud or something.

AveryCI missed this when it originally came up. If anyone who ordered one no longer wants their pad please let me know, and I’d be happy to purchase it from you when it does finally arrive.

I bought this over the summer as part off an earlier drop. Love the size, thickness, overall comfort. The stuff sack pump adds weight, but you'll want to use it. Keeps breath moisture and nasties out of your pad innards. i've been using a similar stuff sack/pump for my Big Agnes for years and love it. Now for the down side: After just a few uses, my pad developed a slow leak. Slow meaning, butt on the cold ground at 4am. Doing a bathtub test with a pad this size was difficult to say the least, but it seems that it might be a leak around the "deflate" valve. I've submitted a request for warranty coverage or repair to Klymit. 4 days and I'm still waiting for a reply. (other companies I deal with get back to me within 48 or less - Big Agness, Zpacks, Enlightened Equip). The size is great for a low mileage 2 person trip. I really wish I had one that functioned properly.

ShelliCI have two pad and have the same problem on one after only 5 days. The other is much worse. It needs about a breath of fresh air every hour to keep my butt from touching the ground. Did the bath tub test, but I can't find the leak it seal it. Thanks for posting, I'll contact Klymit as well.

tvtruongUpdate: Klymit forward me to Drop, and drop contacted me after about two weeks, but they eventually made it right. My second has also developed a slow leak. I am now 2 for 2. Am I just unlucky? Does anybody who these for more than 20 days update let us know if these are good investment?

I have been testing out a sample of this pad for the last couple of weeks. The quick summary is: I didn't know that I wanted this until I used it with my girlfriend - it's just that comfortable.
The idea of a double pad sounds great, but I'm quite happy with my existing NeoAir Xlite pads, which were already quite an investment, and so I didn't plan to buy any more pads. I have toyed around with different ways of mating the pads and found that while straps were the cheapest and lightest, they also allowed too many gaps. So I made a sil-nylon sleeve for the two pads and that worked well enough. Even with the sleeve, there was always the space between two pads, and my knee or elbow or shoulder would find and get cold throughout the night.
The Massdrop Double would appear to be 7 ounces heavier than my two NeoAir pads. However, once you include the sil sleeve, the weight different is more like 3-4 ounces. That's close enough to make a case for the Massdrop pad being well worth an extra 2 ounces per person, as it is noticeably thicker, quieter and more comfortable. The Double eliminates that cold air gap and the insulation is something like 25% warmer. I was usually warm enough on my old pad, but my gf can tell the difference and she sleeps better. I can't stress that part enough - warmer pad equals better sleep. So, for us, it's an easy decision to use this over the NeoAir.
I think the V chambers plus the polka dotted seams (for lack of better words) in the middle successfully isolate movement from your partner, unlike the standard straight vertical or horizontal chambers. My guess is that the air gets routed around so many directions that it dilutes the movement. This could be the best application of the V chamber yet.
I didn't have the non-slip treatment on my sample, but I know a lot of people add the silnet drops on the bottom of their pad to have the same affect. Not having to futz with that is a nice touch.
Overall, pretty impressed. Given that I'm seeing more and more UL couples, or even families, yet not a lot of new gear for them, this could be a new area of products for Massdrop.

What is the difference between this and the regular non-massdrop one that's insulated and orange, besides the 5oz difference?

Sorry. I meant it is made of heavier materials, thicker nylon. It is heavier per square inch than the "Ultralight" version, which uses thinner materials to save on weight, but makes it less durable. You can find cheaper versions on Klymits ebay store. They routinely have factory refurbished versions of their pads for big discounts. Here is the double V non-insulated for $86 https://www.ebay.com/itm/KLYMIT-Double-V-Two-person-Camping-Sleeping-Pad-FACTORY-REFURBISHED/322437019980?hash=item4b12be794c:g:Hs0AAOSwT-pb41Rd:sc:USPSPriority!22033!US!-1:rk:9:pf:0 I do not currently see the insulated version on ebay, but before I decided to go with the UL version I was interested in the Double V insulated refurbished. I messaged them on ebay and they responded quickly saying they had a refurbished in stock (though it was rare) and could list it if I was interested. I suspect it would be about $100.

I picked my regular dou on their ebay website for the same price as here. Try looking on Ebay. Regular on is 47inches wide. I actually have both. One for backpacking and other for car camping. Perfect width for my Rav4

Hi everyone,
We just received the latest update from Klymit on the Massdrop x Klymit Ultralight Double Sleeping Pad. The necessary revisions announced in our last update are taking longer than expected and, unfortunately, we’re now tracking for a late-September ship date. We apologize for the additional wait and want to thank you all for your patience in spite of the multiple delays.
We’ve worked with Klymit to add an additional credit for $30 to your account. This is in addition to the $15 credit from the initial delay. This credit will be automatically applied to the next drop you join. If you don’t want to wait the additional time you can cancel your order via the transactions page: https://www.massdrop.com/transactions
We’ll provide an update with the latest information in mid-September to keep you all in the loop. Again, our apologies for the additional delay and we’re working to get your sleeping pads to you as soon as we can.

Love the pad. But the ship date is too late - my wife and I start our JMT Hike on July 9, 2018. I was hoping to get it sooner to take it for a “test drive” on our shake down hikes.
