Build quality is 3 stars by itself, these headphones have a good balance between highs and lows. Magnetic lambskin earcups are noise isolating, I found these headphones are made to standards of much more expensive models. They look great and sound equal to higher quality audio. I used a bluetooth adapter with 3.5 mm jack to make mine more portable.
I bought these because I liked the cool retro looks and the impressive build quality, and the reviews of the sound had been largely positive. To me, the sound is muddy in the midbass and midrange, and distorted on peaks even at moderate levels with a good headphone amp. They remind me of my Dad's much hated Magnavox console "hifi" of the early 60s. The Sennheiser HD6XX and AKG K7XX are sonically far superior for a similar outlay. While the build of the M&Ds is better than either of those, the M&Ds are heavy and fit on the ear, rather than around the ear, unless you have tiny ears. The Koss ESP95X is in a higher class altogether, at least for classical and jazz lovers who will use them only at home. Rockers would do better with the HD6XX or PSB MU4-2s. I'm waiting on a pair of HiFi Man HE 4XX with high hopes for an all around budget priced winner.
zingoTAgreed. No matter how i eq’ed mine, they still had a lower quality sound. They’re built well but slide off too easily and are too heavy after moderate listening periods. What i couldn’t figure was what listening experience they were built for. Not mobile (sliding issue), not exercise (bulky and sliding issue), not critical listening (mediocre sound), not work (might as well get the m60s for noise canceling plus the mic is garbage)…
zingoTYour comment about your dad’s ‘phones resonates. I have no idea why he loves his old Magnetbox (Simpsons reference) and array of other crap ‘phones. That said, I hope
I outlive him so I can get my mitts on his three OG amps, each of which weighs like 350 lbs.
