Between smartphones and headphones, there’s often a problem. Most smartphones have USB-C ports, and most headphones have 3.5-millimeter jacks Read More
JamesZuckernikWho's stupid enough to buy the wrong item then blame the "discount" supplier. They can only sell at cheap prices when they don't have to deal with ignorance.
This would have been a no brainer at $50 with MQA compatibility. But without that, I kind of think the USB line out / $10 dongle on a good phone like iPhone / Galaxy / LG V or G series is sufficient. Not going to get a major difference in a lil dongle thingy at this price point. Dragon Fly Cobalt cost $$$ for a reason.
“Seems to me like you have no idea...” < remove the word “like”—unnecessary/passive voice/sounds millennial.
As to the other, I’ve always maintained if you have to explain sarcasm, you’re speaking to the wrong person—or a whiny millennial (or both).
As to my spelling, I lost both of my arms in a tragic pinball machine accident years ago. Since then I’ve been forced to type with my nose, and for expediency, accept the first word suggested by my fone’s soft where ;- )
Apple supplies a similar dingus with their iPhones. Includes a DAC for sure, don't recall if there's an Amp in there too, but as we have already covered in previous conversations, any new to 3-year old iPhone or iPad (or MacBook) will drive 4XX or 6XXs without any issues.
Of course hooking up an external amp certainly won't hurt anything, and you'll certainly be able to get more volume with one, but strictly speaking--it isn't necessary.
That said, forty-bucks probably won't break your bank, and when people notice this thing plugged into your phone and cans/IEMs, while they watch you bobbing your head up and down like an idiot, they're naturally going to assume your kit sounds much better than theirs, and that, in its self is almost worth the $40, right?
BTW: the dingus I refer to above is shown in the lower right-hand corner of a photograph in this link:

Just „something I’ve been cooking“ that anyone else can cheaply try too with any dac&. I just want to find „the perfect portable solution“ to every conceiveable way and quality of music. (I think you should be able to stream DSD music over WiFI with the Up2stream/Linkplay as well).
The „No compromise“ portable solution. And you can use any device to control it too. (Volumio also works in browser, like most of the OS for rapsberry W or I could even put Roon on it) and the Up2stream/Linkplay - they say you are somehow able to control/output with iTunes or Foobar 2000 with UDP/HTTP api but honestly controlling it just via the mobile app seems totally fine to me. And yes you can output stream to it music with AirPlay and DLNA and UDP so no problem there.
I actually wrote a very detailed review but then when I click "post review" I got this "ops we couldn't display your page" and lost all the things I wrote. Tried it a few times and keep getting the same thing.
So I'll just post this here instead.
My current dongle DAC is Hidizs Sonata HD II, I've been comparing it with the Xduoo the last 2 days.
Xduoo Link is cleaner sounding, but almost too analytical and cold.
Xduoo Link has more forward vocal.
Hidizs Sonata HD II has warmer tonality.
Hidizs Sonata HD II has better mid range.
Hidizs Sonata HD II has more bass in general and also deeper bass (sub bass).
Hidizs Sonata HD II has wider sound stage.
So while Xduoo physically has everything that I wanted, nice build quality (metal), nice functional volume play/pause buttons (even work in Windows), nice orange accent.
Drawback is somehow the USB C plug is super super tight and almost feel like it was gonna break my phone, the 3.5 mm plug side also has non-existent "click" when you insert the headphone jack.
But the biggest drawback is that as a whole, I think I still like Hidizs Sonata HD II better (For my preference, Hidizs sounds better). And it's about the same price as Xduoo. So unfortunately I probably would still recommend Hidizs Sonata HD II over Xduoo Link.
Hope this helps. :)
EDIT: By the way this is not to say Xduoo Link is bad, it's actually very clean and detailed dac/amp. But the very very top end and bottom end is just not extended as Sonata HD. Also for my preference I prefer a warmer signature. But if you're after neutrality then the Xduoo is a good choice.
Oh apparently there is a new Hidizs S3 dongle that uses the same DAC but just better construction and better wires. If the price difference is low I'd go for S3, but if it's too much then I'd imagine Sonata HD II should be almost identical.
Also here are some random tidbits that I don't know if it would help or not. But when people say "all sub $200 DAC more or less sound the same" and "all DAC if done correctly should all sound the same", I would say it's not entirely correct because it took me many many tries until I found the Sonata HD II which fits my preference perfectly also works for the headphone pairing (Denon AH-D2000).
To my ear that SDAC sounds different than Burr Brown DAC sounds different than Cirrus Logic DAC and sounds different than Wolfson DAC. I've gone through FiiO E10K, NuForce UDAC-3, Schiit Fulla 1, SMSL M3, iFi Nano Black Label, SDAC/O2, Apple dongle, Pixel 2 dongle, Pixel 3 dongle, a third party random dongle and finally Xduoo Link and my favourite out of all is Hidizs Sonata HD II. It might just be that I like how the Cirrus Logic CS42L42 sounds or maybe it just match my headphone well, no clue lol. Denon AH-D2000 is only 25 ohm so your mileage may vary (say... If you try to run planar or something lol).
Hope this help people save some money. Because I know I've wasted quite a bit lol. :P
HydeThanks again for generously sharing your research. The S3 is currently for $42.50 on Amazon, after a 15% coupon, while the S2 is for $35. The big difference also is that the S3 supports a microphone whereas the Sonata II requires a firmware downgrade to do so. I have cancelled my Sonata II order and ordered the S3. Thanks again.
Lol the other article (about portable solution) you wrote is a lot of info I'll need to absorb it slowly, but what you write here totally makes sense. I'll look into it, thanks!
HydeNo problem :), I think it makes sense, but I can admit it it’s a bit mad solution. Either I can fit it all in this apppropriately sized up 3d printed case case from thingiverse https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1698550 or if it will be too large, in a seperate case and I would carry it USB connected to the DAC& in the (imo amazing) $35 DD Hifi carry case so it would stay snugly together - pictures btw: https://www.ddhifi.com/productinfo/1034789.html and charge it with very short magnetic volta cables on the Orico 120W/Alxum 96W charging station. (also pretty no frills backup solution)
Drop should make a drop for that carry case IMO :D
Tofigi recommend you look up where most of the stuff is still made, you might learn something.

Totaal n00b question here: is there any reason why I should use this for my Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ instead of Samsung' own USB-C to 3.5mm dongle?
Samsung' own dongle costs less then $10 and this one 4x as much....
Yeah the „promise“ of TWS is nice. But TWS IEM/BT headphones are going to have to wait for good DACs&s to tricle down. (like the THX AAA-0 amp chip, or THX AAA-28 for BT headphones or even the TSX-88/1138/1139 , why no one implements those?). Hopefully companies will pay money and/or copy the designs of those chips and make a smaller copy of like the khadas tone board (open source). We’ll just have to wait and choose our phones with care.
And it will make the sales of cheap good DAPs rise, for sure.
I feel like they should've at least wait till the first drop people to get their items before starting second drop.
This way the people in the first drop can write their impressions for the round 2 people to see before purchasing them.
I'm one of the ones that bought them in first round LOL. Still waiting for the item to arrive but it should be soon.
Apple’s $9 usb-c/lighting to 3.5mm scored unbelievably high, especially for the price, beating everything. It’s only been dethroned by the latest dongle DACs that are coming out for >$50. Here are the measurements:
https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/review-apple-vs-google-usb-c-headphone-adapters.5541/
There are now going to be better ones like Musiland (same as Meizu, & already measured and better) or Hidizs S3 or iBasso DC02 but all of those are $50 up, that is used DAP/portable dac& category and any of those will wipe the floor with any dongle DAC. Or even consider used/refurbished(aliexpress) V/G series phone like the V20 b&o/korean edition for 100 USD, and $7 for USB audio player pro and you’ll have the sleekest no frill setup.
