You can use your computers internal DAC, but if you are going to invest in this killer amp, it will reviel the shortcomings of your laptops onboard DAC. Are you planning to go fully balanced to your cans? If so, you'd benefit from a DAC that can support that, such as the SDAC-B here on Drop, of the Topping 30 or 50, or the brand new SMSL M200 (balanced with bluetooth), or the SMSL SU-8, or wait for the SU-9, or look at the offerings from Schiit. There are more options, but you go up in price. Hope this helps, Eric.

this amp is much larger than the original Cavalli Liquid Carbon box (perfect size for my desk) and though it is much bigger the power supply is not inside but outside as a bulky power brick. Why does Drop have to use such mega big boxes to enclose their amps?

I have the 789 paired with a Topping D70. Would the LCX be any sort of downgrade?

Well I'm not the best at describing sound. I'd say that the D70 is more refined than the SDAC-B. The D70 seems to bring out some more details I didn't hear with the SDAC-B. I'm controlling the volume via the D70 with the remote so I don't touch the volume on the 789.

The Drop x Senn 6XX is an HD650 in different colorway and a shorter cable terminated in 3.5mm. The HD600 and HD650 do differ slightly in their tonality. HD650 has more bass and less upper mid/low treble, generally speaking lots of revisions on these over the years.

How is the Asgard comparable? It doesn't have any balanced connections?

Balanced isn't by definition better, especially at this price point. There are a few (if not more) amp designs and balanced is just one of the options that could be a good option for some designs. Btw I own the lcx, so it's not like I'm being biased towards the Asgard.

I'm in Ontario and my THX AAA 789 cost $319.25 U.S. (which includes shipping to SW Ontario). In Canadian dollars that should be about $450. You're right about the $10 brokerage fee so the Canadian total becomes $460. Then 13% tax is applied to the full $460. I'm estimating that my purchase will come in around $520.

Ah, just missed the sale by 1 day. Just when I finally decided that I want to try "balance" for my desk setup. And from reviews, it added some warmth on the sound, which I prefer. Drop, any chance to offer it again for 160?

If you’ve tried the THX, clean and transparent amp and found it was not your taste for any reason ... The Cavalli Liquid Carbon X is a good alternative. Just remember it doesn’t measure well according to Audio Science Review on Single Ended (6.3mm/3.5mm out).

$160?! Gotta be worth this just to give it a try for fun. Not that I need another headphone amp. ...but $160?!

Glad it went back up, agree that $160 was very tempting but I have 4 solid state desktop amps already... was considering running the THX SE pass into this then SE pass out to my iHA-6.

Coming from someone who had the original Liquid Carbon (pre-Massdrop) and currently owns the 789, this is a no brainer at the $160 price point! My only comment would be the Liquid Carbon really should be used with balanced headphones if at all possible (SE source is fine). It is a balanced amp first and foremost, with a provision to run SE - but at significantly reduced power. I know what the measurements show but comparing it to the 789 (running balanced headphones) is more a different rather than better discussion. The Josh Valour comparison video posted below is pretty much spot on. If I had a need for another amp I would absolutely grab this at the $160 price!

Sounds about right. I've got both the LCX and the 789 from the first drops. The LCX imparts a lot of low end flavor to everything thrown through it unlike the 789, which as you said is pretty much a utility amp. Not only does the LCX run warm, but you need to let it heat up for a good 15-30 minutes before it looses the mushiness it has when cold. It works with every set of cans I've tried, and rather well power wise. It isn't the best sound for cans that are already extra bassy, but on cans that are light on it... divine. I generally find that I use planar magnetics on it (T60RP, HE4xx), but I've recently had excellent luck with it and Beyerdynamic T1 g2. Worth every cent, even if I was mad at Drop for releasing the 789 weeks later.

Yep and if you use a balanced DAC in the SE isn't even that bad as you get more gain.

That's what I started out with and it was great but if you mean paired with this amp I'd suggest the balance dac by the same brand Sorry for the late response
