Finding your groove: getting into vinyl with Audio-Technica
I’d like to think that I could’ve been friends with the late Hideo Matsushita, founder of Japanese Hi-Fi powerhouse Audio-Technica. If I could, I’d travel back in time to 1960’s Tokyo, where a young Matsushita curated “vinyl listening sessions” at the Bridgestone Museum of Arts, exposing visitors to the sounds and possibilities of high end audio and the warmth of vinyl records. I imagine sitting with him in a mod coffee shop, listening to the stories of what he witnessed in those sessions, the conversations he had with visitors, and what ultimately motivated him to head back to his small apartment above a ramen restaurant and start an audio company of his own.
In the histories I’ve read regarding AT’s humble beginnings, Matsushita’s motives seem clear. Produce high end audio at affordable prices, bringing audio excellence into spaces and to customers that simply didn’t have access to it before. His first two products, the AT-1 and AT-3 phono cartridges did exactly that, and...

I am tired of import taxes every time I participate in a drop. I don't mind paying the actual price of products in USD even with the Canadian dollar doing so bad. I was wondering if there is any chance of a Canadian branch ever opening up so drops can be mailed quicker and import taxes wouldn't apply. I know there are a lot of Canadian customers who would appreciate this as well. Something similar to what Amazon.ca does.
hello guys. I have been requested by kinera to post this review for you guys on massdrop.
Here is my review of the product, make sure to watch the full video for a chance to win !

OK before this even begins.. STOP!
Many myths have existed for many years and while I am sure heated debate will arise I want to ask everyone to respect the rules of these forums. Act civilized. State your point of view, be open to other peoples point of view and hopefully we can at least UNDERSTAND where people are coming from and not just arguing for the sheer joy of it.
I guess I will start.
HEADPHONE and SPEAKER BURN-IN
A topic that comes up for me pretty often and yes.. I do think something happens when you take a BRAND NEW off the assembly line moving driver dynamic speaker with suspensions and surrounds and webbing and run it for X hours. Now I am not saying you have to do this. It may not even benefit you or if there is a change it might be so small it isn't worth even thinking about. But Physics dictates if a precision device has a job of moving hundredths of a millimeter then I expect if it gets used initially then the moving fabric, foam and rubber parts may...
Lets make this happen, a baby Orpheus for the modern audiophile world. We have the Sennheiser HE 1, but no other electrostatic from the company for the audiophile that's looking for the Sennheiser sound at an (way more) accesible price. The system should be based on the HE 60 project, an electrostatic with price-consciousness in mind, as the then HE 90 (Orpheus) was too expensive just as the HE 1 is actually. And just like the 600 series it should have a good build quality but using the famous plastic that Sennheiser is known for, which we still have from the 580 Precision and it is still rock solid. And most importantly, great sound quality paired with an energizer that can deliver (more than) enough power to drive the electrostatic driver. I would suggest the name to be HE 0X (Zero X), as it's a baby HE 1 and an 'X' has always trailed on Massdrop x Sennheiser collaborations. I had previously seen that Will from Collaborations said they had already pitched Sennheiser for the HE X0,...
Anyone think massdrop should expand their audiophile community/drops with more 2 Channel stereo gear (turntables/speakers floor and bookshelf/power amps/preamps/accessories)? Or does it not make sense for them...
I'm curious how many people here have turntables (that aren't neglected in the garage or attic). There are a lot of great things that I'd love to see drop here specifically for turntables. Record clamps/weights, phono preamps, cleaning supplies, etc. There are so many accessories. Having a turntable show up from time to time would be pretty cool too.
Obviously if nobody is really interested in turntables here there isn't much point trying to find some cool stuff to drop.
There's a few good headphone options for EU customers, including the 6XX and 58X, but having the option for the Focal Elex is something I'd like to see in the future.
Hey guys,
We want to know what Closed Back Headphones all of you are into. We already source a variety of brands, types, and styles, but are always looking to stay in tune with the interests of the Audiophile Community.
· What do you look for in a closed-back headphone?
· What kind of strap/headband do you prefer?
· Are there particular brands you like?
Your suggestions and feedback are taken into account when we look for products to put on the site so tell us what you like, what you don’t like and any preferences you have in between.
Thanks!

I decided to design and build some headphone stands for myself and my friends. It started out with pencil and paper sketching, then it transitioned to a cardboard out-out model, and now I finished the project. I used SolidsWorks to model it and then I transferred it to MasterCam to plan the CNC routing.
I am using 3/4 inch wood board and stacking 4 of them on top of each other. The center 2 pieces will have through holes and the out 2 pieces will only have holes cut 1/2 inch in. Then dowel rods and wood glue will be used to make sure the outside faces are nice and pretty.
Update 3/30
Hey Friends,
Today’s the day. SoundID + Custom EQ update is available for Panda.
For this first update, you’ll need to use our OTW update tool, download the windows or Mac version here:
https://dro.ps/panda_updater_windows
https://dro.ps/panda_updater_mac
For best results, power off your panda, turn off BT on all paired devices (computer, ipad, phone, etc), and connect via the included USB-C cable and start the update process.
It should take about two minutes, and at the end you should see firmware version 20003 displayed:
Now, activate BT on the device that you’re using for SoundID (iphone, android, etc), connect Panda, and open the SoundID application (make sure you downloaded the update today).
At the bottom right of the SoundID app you’ll see a “+” and the word “connect” below it. Press there, and on the next menu you should see DROP Panda, and an option to connect on the next screen.
Initial connection and profile upload should take about...

Being a huge dork & former radio show host, I've naturally gotten around to putting my favorite albums into some sort of an ordered list. I find it changes every few years I've done it. Let's hear what you all have! Feel free to include any sort of ranking system (or lack thereof), or any number of albums.
Here's how mine shook out:
10. Neil Young - Harvest
9. Wire - Pink Flag
8. Judee Sill - Judee Sill
7. The Beach Boys - Smile Sessions
6. Sun Ra - The Antique Blacks
5. Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
4. Can - Ege Bamyasi
3. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
2. Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted
1. Joanna Newsom - Divers
BONUS NERD ROUND: Ok, this is silly, but what are your favorite years in music? I had this conversation recently with some friends after going through the RateYourMusic album charts: https://rateyourmusic.com/charts/top/.
5. 1970
4. 1968
3. 1991
2, 1988
1. 1977
Have you ever found your setup seems to be the magical pairing for some of your favorite musicians and albums? Do you also have a vinyl of that album? This thread is for you, then!
Bonus
Post a photo of a ticket stub with the vinyl!
Anyone who's followed me throughout my time at Massdrop knows that I love the Audio-Technica AD2000's (and Audio-Technica in general). They're notably excellent with presenting female vocals and Kate Bush is one of the most amazing vocalists to have lived; it's a perfect pairing! I was also lucky enough to attend one of her live shows in London—her first in 35 years!
I must say, in all honestly, that I don't spend much time listening to my vinyl with headphones. Maybe that's something to get into in the future.
With millions of songs at our fingertips every minute of every day, it’s easy not to think about where our music comes from—and how exactly it gets to us. The truth is that whenever we play a song on our computer, MP3 player, tablet, or any other device, the music undergoes a complex (but nearly instant) process of conversions, adjustments, and modifications before it hits our ears. One of the most important steps in this audio playback chain is the conversion from digitally stored files into analog signals.
The Digital Revolution
Before internet streaming and other modern technologies came around, everything we heard was stored physically. To save a song or another piece of audio, you needed physical space and a tangible format to store it in (think records, tapes, eight-tracks, and the like). When a signal was recorded, it was saved in analog format, which uses continuously varying signals to represent the fluctuations in air pressure produced by the original sound...
Our third Brand Spotlight, and our first in Audiophile, is a collaboration with one of our favorite partners: Sennheiser. As most of you know, we’ve worked with Sennheiser extensively on a handful of audio projects—most notably our HD 6XX open-back headphones, which have sold more than 100,000 pairs. Now, we’re excited to take a new stride with the legendary German audio brand. Starting next Tuesday, June 9, we’ll be hosting Sennheiser.
What does that mean for you? Well, when you go to Shop: Audiophile during the first 3 days of the Spotlight, things will look a little different. There will be a wide selection of Sennheiser products—from new releases to fan favorites and everything in between—plus offers you’ll only find on Drop through Sunday, June 21. On top of that, each purchase in the Spotlight will earn you up to 15 times the Drop Rewards points.
We can’t wait to kick this initiative off, but you’ll have to sit tight until we announce the full list of products on...
Hey Everybody,
UPDATES about our new Amp & DAC line as of 9/18/2017.
CTH+SDAC
Some good news…we are working to add the 3.5mm output to the SDAC in the CTH+SDAC. The 3.5mm output will be next to the microUSB input jack. You may use a 3.5mm to RCA cable for output. So, there is no pass-through on the CTH+SDAC but you can now get a line-out from the SDAC.
Massdrop O2+SDAC
We’re announcing this combo today and launching on 9/21 for 10 days. Just like the previous O2+ODAC that we used to sell, we’ll have this in the same chassis as before.
The line-up that is currently available:
· Massdrop x Grace Design Standard DAC
· Massdrop O2+SDAC
· Massdrop x Cavalli Tube Hybrid
· Massdrop CTH+SDAC
· Massdrop x Cavalli Liquid Carbon X
Rest of the year:
· Massdrop LCX+SDAC is in progress but not yet developed. (No guarantees, hopefully in 2017.)
· No other Cavalli amps planned in 2017.
· Massdrop Objective 2 amplifier in 2017.
· Liquid Crimson not planned...
